Walter Lowe
REU Undergraduate Fellow
University of Maryland at College Park

Biography

My name is Walter Lowe and I am a Computer Science major at the University of Maryland at College park. At UMCP, I am a member of the Honors and Gemstone programs. Currently, I am working on a computer simulation research project with a team of fellow Gemstone Students. We are attempting to successfully approximate the behavior of social animals using new tactics such as Multi Agent Systems. In addition, I am also working with the Advanced Internet Satellite Extension Project in order to improve the quality of learning in remote areas of the world.

In the past, I have utilized my computer skills to complete class work as well as outside projects. As a result, I have been exposed to a variety of different types of technology. I have experience working with robust operating systems such as Microsoft Windows as well as several versions of Unix and Linux. In order to complete different tasks, I have used programming languages such as C, C++, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Java, and HTML. I have also learned how to troubleshoot and install various types of hardware. In the future, I hope to use these skills in order to start a successful company in the highly competitive field of computer technology.

I am extremely excited to be working on the Advanced Internet Satellite Extension Project. I believe that I will learn a great deal from the people that I will be working with. This project will also give me another opportunity to put the skills that I have learned in the past to a test. Surely, I will also be learning about new, emerging technologies as well. It is also rewarding to be working on a project that will help to improve the quality of education for those who might not have a chance to learn otherwise.
