D. Professional Activities
1. Envisioned, developed and implemented a multi-disciplinary, international
distance education curriculum focused on the Environment and Sustainable Food
Systems. The course is the U.S. 2000-01 national award-wining course for the
American Distance Education Consortium. The course links live video and internet 36
institutions internationally including Sweden, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Honduras,
Australia, India, and the U.S. Invited by the Vice President of the UN and
Conference Chair for the UN World Summit on Sustainability in Johannesburg South
Africa to demonstrate the Global Seminar for a gathering of 80,000 people and
1-2,000 members of the press.
2. Electronic infrastructure development, visioning, and implementation of
distance learning a) the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell which
includes 25 departments and sections, b) participant in international conferences
for ICDE including session chairs, numerous presentations and facilitation roles;
c)American Distance Education honorable mention for "barrier buster" award, d)
Chair National Town Meeting for Distance Learning 2 hour satellite program for 60+
universities in 2000.
3. National and regional academic leadership: a) General Administration Board
of the USDA Graduate School, appointed by Secretary of Agriculture, Ann Venneman:
b) developed Northeast Strategic Plan for Academic Programs for 12 states.
4. Project Development: a) New York State Director and Cornell Institutional
Director, Mid Atlantic Consortium for Food Systems Professions, W.K. Kellogg
Foundation, 3.1 M for NY, NJ, Del. & Md. leading over 40 individual planning grants
and projects; b) Legislative funding $400,000 for national competitive grants
program with 12 projects awarded annually for 3 years.
5. Chaired National award winning Ph.D. thesis AAAE 2000 on distance
learning in animal science.
6. Thesis Advisor and Postgraduate Advising 17 PhD students and 27 Masters
students.
