Dr. Alton Thompson
North Carolina A&T University

On July 1, 2000, Dr. Alton Thompson became dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental and Allied Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University.

Thompson has been chairman of North Carolina A&T's Department of Agriculture Education, Economics and Rural Sociology and director of the university's Applied Survey Research Laboratory since 1996.

Thompson began his career as an assistant professor at Norfolk State University in 1981. He came to North Carolina A&T for the first time a year later. He spent seven years in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology before going to North Carolina State University as an assistant professor. He returned to North Carolina A&T in 1991 as an adjunct associate professor.

Thompson is a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association, the Rural Sociological Society, and the Southern Rural Sociological Association.

A native of Chocowinity, North Carolina, Thompson earned a Ph.D. in rural sociology from The Ohio State University.
