$2000 Cash Award The Human Ecology 2 + 2 Child Development Program builds upon associate degrees granted by community colleges in the rural eastern shore of Maryland and Virginia. Courses in this program are offered in various formats to fit the needs and lifestyles of learners. Initially, most courses were offered in the evenings via video conferencing using the VS400 system to transmit images and audio. In the beginning, only one class each semester was web based. Today the video conferencing/online hybrid courses are still conducted; however, the number of completely web-based courses has increased significantly, usually two courses per semester. When video conferencing is used at an established location, a trained facilitator is available at the receiving site (partnering community colleges) to offer technical and academic support. Starting in the Spring 2004 semester, the number of online courses added to the Head Start Cohort expanded. We now offer five classes a year to this cohort of working professionals. The move towards a greater number of online courses was based on an effort to better serve the needs of working adult learners and to shorten the time to degree completion. To enhance the on-line efforts, a series of workshops were designed and a detailed handbook compiled to assist non-traditional students in their use of all components of the WebCT online learning platform, as well as training faculty members in the use of Web-CT technology. University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Dr. Shirley Hymon-Parker Dr. Nina Lyon Jenkins Ms. Donna Satterlee Capacity to Deliver Increasing Sixty-five percent of the courses are being taught using WebCT, 20 percent via video-conferencing, and 35 percent via field-experience and on-site instruction by UMES-employed faculty. The website posts notices and a calendar of events, highlights projects and student activities and accomplishments, as well as provides motivational excerpts and quotes to all participants. While the Human Ecology 2 + 2 Child Development Program began with non-traditional students in mind, we now offer at least one course each semester on-line for traditional students in all Human Ecology majors. This action has helped to increase the department’s and the university’s ability to offer more courses for the students while keeping costs down. The Department of Human Ecology is currently the only department in the university to offer a program via distance education. Web-Godfrey-Hill Award The award is presented annually after extensive peer review in honor of Burleigh Webb, Dan Godfrey and Walter Hill. These three individuals believed in the ADEC dream (and that of its predecessor organization Ag*SAT). From the beginning they served on the ADEC Board of Directors and Program Panel. Godfrey and Hill also were recognized with ADEC’s highest recognition, the “Irving Award.”
