Wraparound Activities

Develop a Local Program to Enhance the IDEAL2 Videoconference

One important objective of the IDEAL2 videoconference is to promote discussion and idea sharing at the participating institutions about distance learning opportunities.

The IDEAL2 videoconference will address several administrative issues that impact an institution's ability to develop and deliver successful distance education programs. The videoconference will highlight multi-institutional distance programs and will showcase successful strategies for increasing collaboration among institutions.

You can enhance the educational experience for your participants by providing structured opportunities for local discussion. At a minimum, we strongly encourage you to lead a local discussion after viewing the videoconference. We have provided a separate list of discussion questions that you may use.

In addition, we have developed some additional suggestions for local activities. You may use any of the following suggestions or design your own activity.

  1. Panel discussion
Invite a panel of speakers to discuss issues related to multi-institutional distance education programs. Possible panelists include the Chief Information Officer, distance education administrators, the Registrar, a librarian, financial aid advisors, faculty who have taught distance courses, students, and representatives from other institutions (e.g., possible partners).

  2. Review your institution's plans for distance education
Obtain copies of your institution's formal plans for distance education. These may include strategic plans or other reports and policy guidelines. Provide copies of the plans (or the executive summaries) to the participants. As a group, review the plans to determine if they are up-to-date. Were issues raised in the videoconference that are not addressed in the plans?

  3. Explore the market for your distance education programs
Gather copies of your institution's marketing materials (brochures, posters, advertisements, etc.) for its distance education programs. If possible, obtain similar materials from some of your competitors. Discuss the similarities and differences between your programs and those of your competitors. Try to identify your competitive strengths and weaknesses.

  4. Conduct a brainstorming session about possible collaborators
Identify possible higher education partners who could participate with you in a multi-institutional distance education program. Consider the following categories:
    • institutions in your region
    • institutions that offer comparable programs (who may benefit from sharing resources)
    • institutions that use distance delivery systems that are compatible with yours
