Lac du Flambeau,
University of Wisconsin, Madison Extension Site Visit 8/8/02
Brian Guthier is the UW Extension Officer at Lac du Flambeau and ADEC
PCO. For UW Extension, Brian facilitates continuing education and career
counseling in the new multi-use planning building that also houses the
local bank. The Tachyon CPE provides the center's internet access, as
the only other solution would be dial-up. I met with Brian and Emerson
Coy, Planning Director for Lac du Flambeu Tribe to discuss the future
use of the equipment.
Both were pleased with the performance of the Tachyon CPE. The planning
center offers community access to the internet on 5 terminals with the
lab being used regularly for e-mail and web-surfing. Brian hopes to expand
on his current extension programming by offering educational programs,
business classes, and job skills training in the future.
Another use may be to provide access in the cultural center/museum across
the street. An alternative high school, centered on Ojibwe culture, is
opening there this fall. They would like to look into the possibility
of gaining internet access from the Tachyon in that structure as well.
The students will have access to the Planning Center terminals at the
very least. It will be interesting to follow their educational programming
expansion over the next year.
