Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community
College Site Visit 8/7/02
Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community College (LCOOCC) is located in northwestern
Wisconsin on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation. The college is impressive
with its excellent facilities and extensive course offerings including
Cisco training, computer basics, web-design, PC ware, GIS, GPS, and Remote
Sensing to name some of the more advanced technical offerings. I met with
Greg Furtman (Director of IT Development), Jeff Ames (IT Development Specialist),
and Renfro Carley (Network Engineer).
Similarly to LLTC, the group was running the CPE as a stand alone to
provide internet access to an open lab and run a distance education course
in remote sensing. They are currently looking at multi-port server options
to bridge the Tachyon into the college's network. The CPE will also provide
access in the newly redesigned geospatial technologies lab.
Other proposed uses include providing outreach access. LCOOCC has extension
sites at Red Cliff, Bad River, and St. Criox. Procuring terminals for
these sites is a future possibility. Currently a large number of adjunct
instructors teach courses at these sites. The ability to videoconference
or multicast courseware would be very beneficial.
Jeff Ames is very excited about the potential that I2 may provide, as
he and Greg expand the college's technology infrastructure. Both are working
under a NSF grant to build the virtual portion of the college. Currently
there are seven webcourses being offered: Computer Basics, PC-Ware, Web
Page Development, Composition II, Medical Terminology, Environmental Science,
and Technology for Teachers. They intend to add more in the near future.
