Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indians (CTUIR)
Meeting 2/14/03
The following people were in attendance:
- Bill McCaughen, OSU, Dean of Distance and Continuing Education
- Lloyd Commander, CTUIR, General Manager of Education Center
- Storm Johnson, CTUIR, IT
- Phil LaCourse, CTUIR, Human Resources
- Susie Calhoun, CTUIR, Eastern Oregon University, Outreach
- Lou Farrow, CTUIR, Student Services
- Ami Muilenburg, CTUIR, Early Childhood Development
- Susan Ely, CTUIR, GED/HSED, ABE
- Bruce Kline, CTUIR, Dept. of Children and Family Services
We had a really good turnout for this meeting with individuals from
a wide range of departments at CTUIR. Because there were many new
faces around the table, Bill and I gave some overview of ADEC,
particularly AISEP. Storm highlighted access to the lab and what
was offered from various educational institutions. Out of the ensuing
discussions came the following ideas:
- Further credentialing for HR people
- Career information system
- Showcase of unique CTUIR projects such a the Lamprey Eel Project
- Web-based GED/HSED
- Lifeskills courses
- Language classes
- Long distance communications
We then focused on steps to formalize the ideas listed above as well
as future initiatives:
- Conducting an educational needs assessment
- Creating a community curriculum based on the matrix of jobs and skill garnered from the needs assessment
- Creating a website/interface to direct students (i.e. not just a set of links)
- Tribal Virtual College
Bill said he and Katherine Bell, Distance Education Advisor at OSU's
E-Campus would be back in two to three weeks to help work on the needs
based assessment. Lloyd said that colleges having MOU's with CTUIR
should meet to discuss future options. Overall, the meeting was very
productive.
