FAILURE OF GALAXY IV

TECH-NOTE: 06/04/98

ADEC has been advised by PANAMSAT that its GALAXY IV satellite has been taken out of service indefinitely. The satellite was placed in a higher altitude parking orbit on May 21, 1998. Communications transmissions from the satellite ceased during the afternoon of May 19, due to anomalies in the on-board spacecraft control processor (SCP). External causes for the failure have been ruled out.

Much of the Ku-band traffic has been moved from GALAXY IV which was located at 99 degrees West Longitude to GALAXY III-R located at 95.0 degrees West Longitude. The C-band satellite, GALAXY VI, completed a move from its original orbital position at 74 degrees West into the orbital position formerly occupied by GALAXY IV on May 27, 1998.

PANAMSAT does not foresee reinitiating telecommunications services from GALAXY IV.
