Dr. Kevin Gamble, NCSU
ADEC Chief Technology Officer and NSF AISEP Project Director

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Kevin Gamble, director of Information Technology for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University has agreed to become ADEC Chief Technology Officer and will also serve as Project Director for our new National Science Foundation Program: Advanced Internet Satellite Extension Project (AISEP). Gamble will retain a 10% appointment at NCSU for linkage purposes with NCSU. The NCSU staff has been highly supportive of ADEC efforts in information technology and hosts the ADEC webserver.

Dr. Gamble is best known for his efforts in leading the Cooperative Extension System on to the Internet. He was part of a team that developed the Almanac Information Server in 1991 as a mechanism for sharing land-grant university information worldwide. Almanac was one of the Internet's first listserv programs. He implemented the Cooperative Extension System's first World Wide Web server in 1993. He was an early pioneer in using the Internet and WWW for online teaching and learning. Most recently he has been involved in founding the Land Grant Open Source Alliance, a consortium of universities dedicated to the collaborative development and sharing of open-source software and course content.

Gamble is a member of the ADEC Program Panel and was very instrumental in development of the strategy for AgNIC, the Sustainable Agriculture Network and CYFERNet. The linkages to these projects will be important to ADECs future development.

Gamble earned his PhD in 1985 in Agricultural and Extension Education from Iowa State University. He served on the staff at Oregon State University and held a two year IPA at Extension Service, USDA before joining NCSU.

Gamble will assume his new responsibilities on December 1.

In addition to the Project Director, ADEC expects shortly to appoint an Internet Engineering team and a Project Applications team. Arrangements are also in progress working closely with the 1890 institutions for a coordinator for HBCU programs. Discussions are also in progress for appointment of an ADEC - Tribal Colleges and Universities coordinator.
