JAN: The earth's weather is better understood as a loosely connected network of forces. It has patterns and regularities unlike those of the more familiar linear systems (such as those on a billiard table).

WHEN A NONLINEAR SYSTEM IS FAR FROM EQUILIBRIUM IT IS ACUTELY SENSITIVE TO SMALL CHANGES IN INPUTS TO THE SYSTEM.....SMALL INPUT CHANGES CAN EVENTUALLY PRODUCE LARGE CHANGES IN OUTCOMES. Literally we can't see the forest because there aren't any trees. The forest is once again a hunter's environment with a high carrying capacity and it favors fast growth. Where are our educational institutions? Have they reached a condition of conservation....have they reached structural maturity? Will our current species continue to develop a sustainable framework within which to live and co-evolve.
