- History
- Russian Federation has almost 70 years experience with traditional
correspondence distance education.
- First discussions of cooperation held during Dr. Yuri Lachuga’s
visit to the USA (Maryland, Nebraska) in 1997.
- ADEC Involvement
- In March 1999 ADEC and Russian Agriculture Ministry signed a Memorandum
of Understanding on Cooperation in Distance Education
- “Information Technologies in Agricultural Education” held at the
Moscow Agro-Engineering University in September 1999. TACIS and
the Russian Agriculture Ministry jointly sponsored the workshop.
It attracted 165 participants, including 45 foreign experts.
- U of M Activities
- University of Maryland organized two hands-on distance education
workshops for faculty that were held in Moscow (1999) and Novosibirsk
(2000).
- The Moscow workshop had 24 participants representing seven institutions.
- U of MD Activities
- The Novosibirsk workshop had 16 participants representing four
institutions.
- Several training programs on various aspects of distance learning
for Russian faculty have been organized and sponsored by the UoMD
and held in Maryland during 1998-2000.

- TACIS Project “Improvement of Agriculture Through Higher Education”,
1998-2001.
- Open Agrarian University has been organized and started operations
in 2000.
- Center for Information Technologies and Distance Education was
established at the Moscow Agro-Engineering University to serve as
a resource for Russian agricultural educational institutions.
- Moscow Consortium
- Agrarian Education Consortium for Distance Education was organized
in April 2000 by seven Moscow-based agrarian higher education institutions.
- Consortium objective is to provide integration and coordination
of scientific and methodological support of distant education.

Study Abroad Program at MSAU
- Twenty-seven undergraduate students, three graduate students,
and nine professors from the U.S. have participated in these programs.
- A comparable number of Russians from MSAU have also participated.

The Global Seminar is an international collaborative effort
that offers a course to undergraduate and graduate students around the
world on the environment and sustainable food systems.
